LENOVO ACQUIRES STONEWARE TO EXPAND SECURE CLOUD COMPUTING

Lenovo grows its technology portfolio and advances its PC Plus strategy Stoneware brings substantial experience and expertise in secure cloud computing

RALEIGH, N.C. and Carmel, IN, September 18, 2012: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the acquisition of Stoneware Inc., to enhance and expand its cloud computing solutions, a key component of Lenovo’s product portfolio. Stoneware has built a strong, profitable, and growing business by delivering innovative software technologies, which are helping people and organizations make the complex environment of cloud computing that much simpler.

As a result of this acquisition, Lenovo will add significant new technologies and accelerate its capabilities for both commercial and consumer cloud offerings, particularly the ability to provide secure content across multiple devices in education and government.

Lenovo’s product portfolio will benefit from the experience and expertise of the Stoneware team. Stoneware already has several strong, highly innovative cloud products – including webNetwork and LanSchool – that serve millions of users primarily in education and the public sector. Lenovo will help extend the reach of these products as well as new offerings through its global reach as the world’s second largest PC maker and number one commercial laptop company. Lenovo will also help develop the opportunity to extend this technology, beyond the current strongholds that Stoneware has in government and in education, into more consumer focused offerings over time.

“Adding Stoneware cloud computing into the Lenovo line up presents a significant opportunity to leverage their success, and enhance our PC Plus offerings, all to the benefit of our customers“ said Peter Hortensius, senior vice president, and president, Product Group, Lenovo. “We have a history of innovation and embracing new technologies, and the talented team at Stoneware will fit in perfectly with our long-term strategy.

With today’s typical technology user carrying multiple devices, the PC Plus era is here, and Lenovo is aggressively expanding its product offerings and capabilities to help people and businesses connect across any device to the content and communities that matter most to them. Customers simply want a better way to connect their PC with their tablet with their smartphone, and with Stoneware, Lenovo aims to help them get there.

The purchase of Stoneware is critical to Lenovo’s broader PC Plus strategy. As a recognized leader in PCs, with the momentum of an expanding tablet and smartphone business and a newly formed joint venture with EMC, Lenovo aims to offer end-to-end secure solutions to business customers and compelling cloud-based technology to consumers.

“We are pleased to be joining forces with Lenovo”, said Rick German, CEO, Stoneware. “Lenovo is one of the largest and fastest growing technology companies in the world and for Stoneware, a small company with roots in the heartland of the United States, we are delighted to be given the opportunity to deliver real benefit to customers on a global stage.”

While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition is not material to Lenovo’s earnings. Stoneware has 67 employees, located in either Indiana or Salt Lake City, Utah. As part of this agreement, it is expected that all U.S.-based Stoneware employees will join Lenovo, and that there will be no job losses as a result of today’s announcement.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2012 and in the coming weeks the Stoneware team will be fully integrated into Lenovo. The Stoneware team will remain in Indiana and Utah and will continue to sell both webNetwork and LanSchool while serving customers and partners with the same level of dedication and excellence.

LanSchool Announces Tech Console Device Management Software for Schools

Software enables Tech Coordinators to remotely manage all computers within a school or district from a central location at no cost for the first year

June 26, 2011, Philadelphia, PA—LanSchool Technologies, the leading provider of cross-platform classroom management software, today announced at ISTE 2011, LanSchool Tech Console, the new management console for use by Tech Coordinators. With TechConsole, an individual tech coordinator can easily manage, monitor and communicate with hundreds of individual classroom computers remotely from a central console, which displays the current state of all computers under management within a district or school.

“LanSchool has focused on delivering affordable classroom management software designed to help teachers become better educators in the computer-aided classroom,” said Dana Doggett, President and Founder of LanSchool. “With the Tech Console, we are helping tech coordinators become better managers of the technology they are responsible for.”

With the Tech Console, coordinators can install applications, upgrades and updates remotely to ensure that each computer on the network is running the most current software. Tech Console also allows tech coordinators to report on inventory and technology usage. To help address the needs of teachers, coordinators can use the Tech Console to communicate directly with them via live chat or remote control, guiding them through issues or alerting them of potential problems.

“We received a great deal of input from tech coordinators on their specific needs,” said Ben Cahoon, Vice President at LanSchool. “We believe that most desktop management products have become too complex for most schools. Tech Coordinators need powerful, yet simple tools to help them manage the computers they are responsible for.”

In addition to remote control, inventory and software distribution, the Tech Console enables coordinators to improve uptime by checking the security settings on each computer, verifying automatic updates and even controlling Windows SteadyState™. To conserve energy costs, tech coordinators can also set and optimize power consumption levels on all computers saving school energy costs.

Finally, to help schools through the funding challenges over the next school year, LanSchool is providing the Tech Console to K-20 educational institutions free of charge for the first year.

LanSchool v7.3 Sets the Standard for 1:1 Computing

Orem, Utah May 26th, 2009 – LanSchool Technologies LLC, a leading provider of classroom management software, announced that LanSchool v7.3 is available. This release has many innovative and unique features to help support schools in their 1:1 initiatives.

“For the past 6 months we’ve been working closely with current customers that are using LanSchool in their 1:1 schools.” said Dana Doggett, president of LanSchool. “We love putting engineers in the classroom, because it allows them to interact with teachers and solve real problems. Battery monitoring and the ability to quickly load a class with the associated settings were a direct result of listening to teachers.”

For years, LanSchool has been the leader in wireless performance. The efficient use of wireless bandwidth is the foundation for a successful implementation of classroom management software in a 1:1 environment. LanSchool v7.3 extends that advantage by providing the following features:

  • - Class lists and settings profiles allow teachers to start class in seconds vs. minutes.
  • - Battery monitoring gives critical insight to the state of laptop batteries
  • - Co-browse the Internet
  • - Randomly select a student
  • - Students can ask the teacher questions electronically without raising their hand
  • - Up to 3000 students can be monitored from a single console

In addition to the 1:1 enhancements, LanSchool v7.3 now supports Windows Vista 64 and Windows Server 2008. Many new features were added such as the ability to blocked IP address browsing, randomize test questions, immediately block current web pages, show students available web sites, unlimited Internet history and snap-to-grid in the thumbnail layout.

Roger Bower, with The Principia School in St. Louis, selected LanSchool for their 1:1 tablet program. “After evaluating all of the classroom management tools, we selected LanSchool because it was simple to install, easy to use and it just works. Based on our use of LanSchool v7.2, we had some ideas on how to decrease the time it took for teachers to start the class and LanSchool worked closely with our teachers to implement the changes. In a 1:1 environment, we see LanSchool as a classroom tool that can transform education by increasing student participation and accountability and facilitating real-time assessment.”
